Corporate Social Responsibility - Prudential Malaysia

At Prudential, we view our corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the same seriousness as meeting our customers, distributors, employees and shareholders' needs. Caring for the community is an expression of our brand motto - always listening, always understanding. We call it "doing business with a conscience"

While the philosophy permeates every facet of our business, there is one particular cause that we hold dear to our hearts - that of children and youth development. We believe that children are our future, and should be given ample opportunities for growth and development no matter their background, race or circumstances. Thus, the PRUhome project was born.

Our mission in providing care for underprivileged children started in 1993, when we launched the Prudential Welfare Home or PRUhome. Since then, PRUhome has provided shelter to more than 80 children in 2 bungalows that we purchased in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Fully funded by Prudential, PRUhome currently houses 32 children aged between 8 and 18.

Besides basic necessities, PRUhome also provides an environment conducive for the children’s physical and emotional development. They are enrolled in government schools to enable them to continue receiving formal education. Over the years, PRUhome has received contributions from staff, agents and the public in the form of cash and voluntary work such as free tuition classes for the children. This augurs well for our efforts in building a more caring society.

As part of the activities organised in tandem with 'MyCoreValues Week' in November, PAMB played host to a group of very special visitors from PRUhome. Accompanied by their caretaker, 11 children from PRUhome arrived at the Prudential head office in Kuala Lumpur, where they were taken on a guided tour around the office. During the tour, the children also had the opportunity to meet and interact with a number of Prudential staff from various departments, and observed first-hand how the company's medical cards were printed. Before they left the building, these children made a last stop at the PRUuniversity training hall where they later spent a few hours learning the concept of savings and investment at a financial planning workshop.

In its efforts to nurture young Malaysians to be financially savvy, Prudential launched a financial education programme known as "Money Wise Carnival" for school going children. Kicking it off at one of the secondary schools which Prudential has 'adopted' under the School Adoption Programme (an initiative introduced by the Malaysia Ministry of Education and Bank Negara), the employees walked students through 4 interactive learning booths. Each of these learning booths covered a specific theme surrounding the foundations of financial literacy - all of which were designed to educate the young children about money and financial planning in a manner that they can understand. About 350 students aged between 13 and 14 took part in the half-day event, where they learnt about the history of money, how to grow wealth, how to buy things of value and their own money personalities. Majority of the students responded positively to the Carnival, with 96% of them saying they 'enjoyed and had fun participating' 93% said they had learnt some new ideas about money and finances, whereas about 90% said they would tell their friends about the Carnival.

Life Insurance Day Projects

Prudential has been deeply involved in numerous projects in conjunction with the annual Insurance Day organised by the Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM)

2009 - Blood Donation Drive PAMB participated in a nationwide blood donation drive jointly organised by LIAM and the National Association of Malaysian Life Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAMLIFA). During the week-long activities, PAMB contributed by mobilising its employees and agency to organise a one-day blood donation drive in Ipoh city of the Perak state. The event had successfully attracted more than 130 blood donors, making Prudential one of the highest collectors among the 15 life insurance companies that participated.

CorpSocialResp82004 - Rumah Charis Helped Rumah Charis, a home for needy senior citizens, with financial assistance and treated them to a magic show, games and performance by PRUhome children. The kids presented gifts to the senior citizens, a gesture to instill the significance of giving and caring.

2003 - Ray of Hope Raised fund for Ray of Hope, a centre for children with learning disabilities, to help set up a second centre in Ipoh, Perak. It was in dire need of a new centre before Prudential came along.

2002 - Sponsorship Sponsored the live telecast of the "One Nation We Care" event on national TV to enable it to reach a nationwide audience. More than 3,000 staff and agents lent their support to this event.

2001 - Yayasan Sunbeam Home Organised a party for less fortunate children at Yayasan Sunbeam Home, and contributed a washing machine, 100kgs of rice and cash.

Prudential Caring Fund in Aid of Tsunami Victims - 2004

Prudential launched the Prudential Caring Fund to collect donations from its staff and agents across the globe. In Malaysia, our staff and agents raised RM335,000 within 10 days after the initiative was announced. The Company matched the same by contributing one Ringgit for every Ringgit raised, taking the total to RM670,000. The fund was channelled to help Malaysian children in the worst-hit tsunami areas rebuild their lives. Yayasan Sultanah Bahiyah (YSB), a charitable organisation based in Kedah and recommended by UNICEF for their exemplary work with youth and children, was selected to administer the fund. So far it has enabled YSB to provide the following assistance to the tsunami victims:

• Donated 20 new bicycles

• Organised a sports carnival to help children regain their lives

• Allocated space for and provided free extra classes/tuition and a mini library for students, and sewing classes for housewives

• Donated books to seven primary and secondary schools

• Organised motivational camps for students and teachers

Spread Joy with Toys - 2004

As part of Prudential's 80th anniversary celebration in 2004, we organised a nationwide toy collection campaign in collaboration with the Malaysian Paediatric Association (MPA). The "Spread Joy with Toys" campaign saw Prudential staff, agents, customers and the public collecting 2,400 toys for children warded in Government hospitals. Originally scheduled to run for only a month, the campaign period was extended due to overwhelming public response. We believe this has been a worthy cause as having toys to play with distracts young patients from pain and discomfort, and helps them in their healing process.

PRUkids and PRUyouth Camps

CorpSocialResp10Prudential organised PRUkids and PRUyouth camps to motivate and help children and young undergraduates develop teamwork and leadership skills. The PRUkids camps have benefited more than 80 children aged between 7 and 13, through activities such as telematches, group sketch performances, treasure hunts, group learning exercises and health talks. PRUyouth camps have trained about 50 undergraduates from local universities. Held at Prudential's Training Resort in Pahang, the camp exposed them to a series of self-discovery exercises, different leadership styles and qualities for success.

Hospice Palliative Care Services Public Awareness Campaign

CorpSocialResp11As a caring insurer and a market leader in Crisis Cover products, we wanted to go beyond paying claims for customers who were struck by critical illness. With that in mind, we decided to work with the Malaysian Hospice Council to raise awareness about Palliative Care in Malaysia. This campaign encompassed the production and distribution of posters and leaflets to Prudential agents, hospice centres and hospitals throughout the nation, and an advertising campaign in local newspapers. The campaign, in which Prudential invested more than RM200,000, enabled our agents to understand more about Hospice Palliative Care services and hence, inform their policyholders and families about such services. It also encouraged the public to volunteer and contribute generously to Hospice.
